The standard hydrogen electrode is the universal zero-potential reference electrode; a dry cell generates current from zinc oxidation at the anode and manganese dioxide reduction at the cathode.

i) Construction of the standard hydrogen electrode (SHE):

It consists of a platinum electrode, coated with finely divided platinum black (to increase surface area/adsorption of H2 gas), dipped into a solution containing H+ ions at unit (1 M) concentration.

Pure hydrogen gas at 1 bar pressure is continuously bubbled over the platinum electrode (through a surrounding glass tube), at a standard temperature of 298 K.

The platinum metal itself does not take part in the reaction; it merely provides a surface for the equilibrium H+(aq) + e- <=> 1/2 H2(g) and conducts electrons.

By convention, the standard electrode potential of the SHE is fixed at exactly 0.00 V, and it is used as the reference against which all other standard electrode potentials are measured.

ii) Dry cell (Leclanche cell) - electrode reactions: …
