The Finkelstein reaction converts alkyl chlorides/bromides to alkyl iodides using NaI in dry acetone; separately, the ambident cyanide ion CN− can attack through C or N depending on how ionic/covalent the cyanide salt is - this difference between KCN and AgCN gives different major products with haloalkanes.

  1. Finkelstein reaction: R-X + NaI --dry acetone--> R-I + NaX (X = Cl or Br) The reaction is driven forward because NaCl/NaBr precipitate out of dry acetone (in which NaI is soluble), removing them from the equilibrium.
  2. KCN vs AgCN with haloalkanes:
  • KCN is predominantly ionic, freely furnishing CN− ions in solution. The more nucleophilic and kinetically favoured carbon end of CN− attacks the haloalkane (SN2), so the major product is an alkyl cyanide, R-CN (a nitrile). …
