In Young's double slit experiment, two coherent slits produce an interference pattern on a screen; the spacing between consecutive bright fringes (fringe width) works out to beta = lambda D / d.

Setup: two narrow, coherent slits S1S_1 and S2S_2, separated by distance dd, are illuminated by a monochromatic source of wavelength λ\lambda. A screen is placed parallel to the plane of the slits at distance DD (D≫dD \gg d). Let OO be the point on the screen directly opposite the midpoint of S1S2S_1S_2 (central point, equidistant from both slits).

Path difference: consider a point PP on the screen at distance xx from OO. The path difference between the two waves reaching PP from S1S_1 and S2S_2 is (using the geometry, with D≫dD\gg d so the two paths are nearly parallel):

Δ=S2P−S1P≈xdD\Delta = S_2P - S_1P \approx \dfrac{xd}{D}

Condition for bright fringes (constructive interference): the path difference must be an integral multiple of the wavelength: …
