Gravity separation concentrates an ore by exploiting the density difference between the heavier ore particles and the lighter gangue, using flowing water to wash the lighter impurities away.

Gravity separation (also called levigation or hydraulic washing) is a physical method of ore-dressing used when the ore particles are considerably denser than the earthy/silica gangue (impurity) associated with them. The powdered ore is washed in a strong current of water (on an inclined, vibrating table such as a Wilfley table, or in a hydraulic classifier). The lighter gangue particles are carried away by the flowing water, while the denser ore particles, being heavier, settle down and are collected. This method is commonly used to concentrate oxide ores such as haematite (Fe2O3) and tinstone/cassiterite (SnO2).
