The imprest system is a method of handling petty cash where the petty cashier is advanced a fixed sum, meets small day-to-day expenses from it, and is reimbursed only the amount actually spent at the end of the period, restoring the float to its original fixed level.

This is a standard TS Inter 1st-year Accountancy topic on cash management, aligned with the NCERT/CBSE accountancy treatment of the petty cash book. Under this system, the estimated petty expenditure for a period (a week or a month) is worked out in advance, and a cheque for that fixed amount is given to the petty cashier.
