Economics and statistics are intimately related: economics supplies the problems and statistics supplies the quantitative tools to measure, test and solve them - in demand analysis, national income, price studies, planning and policy.
Meaning of Statistics
The word 'statistics' is used in two senses. In the plural sense it means numerical data or facts (e.g. statistics of population, prices, exports). In the singular sense it is a science and method - the techniques of collecting, organising, presenting, analysing and interpreting numerical data so that valid conclusions can be drawn. Horace Secrist defined statistics (plural) as aggregates of facts affected to a marked extent by multiplicity of causes, numerically expressed, collected in a systematic manner for a predetermined purpose and placed in relation to each other.
Relationship between Statistics and Economics
Economics and statistics are very closely related:
- Testing economic theories: economic laws (law of demand, law of supply, Engel's law) are stated in quantitative terms and are verified using statistical data.
- Measurement of economic facts: aggregates like national income, per-capita income, price index, cost of living and balance of payments can be measured only with statistical methods.
- Study of economic problems: problems of inflation, unemployment, poverty, inequality of income and population growth are analysed through statistical data.
- Economic planning and forecasting: plans and budgets are prepared on the basis of statistical estimates of resources, production and demand; forecasting of future trends uses time-series and index numbers.
- Policy formulation: the government frames taxation, trade and welfare policies on the basis of statistical evidence. …
