A Budget is the government's annual financial statement showing its estimated receipts (revenue) and estimated expenditure for the coming financial year (1st April to 31st March in India). It is presented to the legislature for approval. The budget has two sides — the revenue/receipts side and the expenditure side — and is used to manage public finances and to achieve objectives such as growth, stability and redistribution of income.

Meaning of Budget

The word 'budget' comes from the French word 'bougette', meaning a small bag. In India the financial year runs from 1st April to 31st March, and the budget is presented in Parliament for its approval.
