GST (Goods and Services Tax) is a single, comprehensive, destination-based indirect tax on the supply of goods and services, introduced in India on 1 July 2017. It replaced many central and state indirect taxes, follows 'one nation, one tax', is levied at each stage with input-tax credit, and is finally borne by the consumer.

Full form and meaning

GST stands for Goods and Services Tax. It is an indirect tax levied on the supply of goods and services. It was introduced in India on 1st July 2017 as a major tax reform, replacing a complex system of multiple indirect taxes.

  • Comprehensive single tax: it merged many earlier taxes - central excise duty, service tax, additional customs duty, state VAT, entertainment tax, etc. - into one tax, following the idea of 'one nation, one tax'.
  • Multi-stage but with input credit: it is charged at every stage of production and distribution, but sellers get credit for the tax already paid on inputs (input-tax credit), so tax is effectively paid only on the value added. This removes the cascading (tax-on-tax) effect.
