It is simple, unaffected by extreme values and usable with open-ended classes, but it is ill-defined for bi-modal series, ignores all other values and is not suited to algebraic treatment.
Meaning of Mode
Mode is that value of a variable which occurs most frequently in a series, i.e. the value around which the items are most heavily concentrated. For example, in the series 2, 3, 3, 4, 4, 4, 5, the mode is 4 because it appears the greatest number of times. In a frequency distribution, mode is the value corresponding to the maximum frequency.
Merits of Mode
- It is simple to understand and easy to calculate; in many cases it can be found just by inspection.
- It is not affected by extreme (very high or very low) values in the data.
- It can be determined even for open-ended class intervals, since it does not require the extreme limits.
- It is the most representative or typical value of a series and is widely used in business (e.g. the most demanded shoe size or shirt size).
- It can be located graphically from a histogram.
Drawbacks of Mode
- It is not clearly defined when a series has two modes (bi-modal) or more than two (multi-modal).
- It is not based on all the observations of the series, only on the point of greatest concentration. …
