The harmonic mean (HM) is the reciprocal of the arithmetic mean of the reciprocals of the values. That is, HM = number of items / (sum of the reciprocals of the items). It gives more weight to small values and is specially suited for averaging rates, ratios and speeds.

Meaning

The harmonic mean of a series of values is defined as the reciprocal of the arithmetic mean of the reciprocals of the values. In words, to find the harmonic mean we take the reciprocal of each value, add these reciprocals, divide the number of items by this sum.

Harmonic mean = Number of items / (Sum of the reciprocals of the items)

A simple example

Find the harmonic mean of 2 and 4.

  • Reciprocals: 1/2 = 0.50 and 1/4 = 0.25.
  • Sum of reciprocals = 0.50 + 0.25 = 0.75.
  • Number of items = 2.
  • Harmonic mean = 2 / 0.75 = 2.67 (approximately).

Uses and features

  • The harmonic mean is best suited for averaging rates and ratios, such as speed (kilometres per hour), price per unit, or output per hour, where the quantities are expressed as 'something per something'.
  • It gives greater weight to smaller items in the series. …
