The Barter System is the exchange of goods directly for other goods without money. It worked in simple societies but had serious difficulties: (1) lack of double coincidence of wants — both parties must want each other's goods; (2) no common measure of value — no single unit to express all prices; (3) indivisibility of goods — some goods (a cow, a house) cannot be split for small exchanges; (4) difficulty in storing value — perishable goods lose value over time; (5) difficulty of deferred payments — future contracts are hard to settle. These difficulties led to the invention of money.

Meaning of Barter System

Barter is the system of exchanging goods and services directly for other goods and services, without using money as a medium. For example, a farmer gives wheat to a weaver in exchange for cloth. It is also called the Commodity-for-Commodity (C-C) economy.

Difficulties of the Barter System

  1. Lack of Double Coincidence of Wants: exchange is possible only when each person has what the other wants and wants what the other has. Finding such a matching pair is difficult and wastes time.
  2. Absence of a Common Measure of Value: there is no single unit in which the value of all goods can be expressed, so a vast number of exchange ratios must be remembered (cloth-for-wheat, wheat-for-rice, etc.).
  3. Indivisibility of Goods: many goods, like a cow or a horse, cannot be divided into small parts for small transactions without losing value.
  4. Difficulty in Storing Value (Wealth): storing wealth in the form of goods is difficult; perishable goods decay and others require space and maintenance. …
