Monopoly is a market with a single seller of a product having no close substitutes and strong barriers to entry. Its characteristics are: one seller and a large number of buyers; a product with no close substitute; strict barriers to entry of rivals; the monopolist is a price-maker (he can fix either price or output, not both); there is no distinction between firm and industry; and the firm often earns supernormal profit, sometimes practising price discrimination.

Meaning of Monopoly

The word 'monopoly' comes from 'mono' (single) and 'poly' (seller). It is a market structure in which a single firm controls the entire supply of a product that has no close substitutes, so the firm has full control over the market.

Characteristics of Monopoly

  1. Single Seller, Many Buyers: there is only one producer/seller of the commodity, facing a large number of buyers, so the seller controls the whole supply.
  2. No Close Substitutes: the product has no close substitutes, so buyers cannot shift to another firm's product.
  3. Barriers to Entry: new firms cannot enter the industry because of legal, natural, technical or financial barriers (patents, licences, control over raw material, large capital needs).
  4. Price-Maker: since he controls supply, the monopolist is a price-maker — he can fix either the price or the quantity, but not both independently.
  5. Firm is the Industry: as there is only one firm, there is no difference between the firm and the industry.
