Dinoflagellates belong to Kingdom Protista, studied in the NCERT/CBSE-aligned TS Intermediate biological-classification unit. A brief account:
- Habitat & nutrition — mostly marine, mainly photosynthetic (autotrophic); a major component of ocean plankton.
- Colour — appear yellow, green, brown, blue or red depending on the dominant photosynthetic pigments in the cell.
- Body & wall — unicellular; the cell wall (theca) is made of stiff cellulose plates (armour) fitted together like a suit of armour.
- Flagella — bear two flagella placed in two grooves (furrows) at right angles: one longitudinal flagellum and one transverse flagellum lying in a groove. This gives them a characteristic spinning (whirling) movement — hence dino- ("whirling").
- Nucleus — the nucleus is unusual (mesokaryotic): chromosomes remain condensed. …
