Euglenoids are flagellate protists with a flexible pellicle instead of a cell wall, two unequal flagella and chlorophyll; they are photosynthetic in light but heterotrophic in the dark (plant-animal intermediates).

Characteristic features of Euglenoids:

  • They are mostly fresh-water organisms found in stagnant water.
  • Instead of a rigid cell wall, they have a flexible protein-rich layer called the PELLICLE, which makes their body flexible.
  • They have two flagella - one long and one short - arising from the anterior end, used for locomotion.
  • They have a photosensitive eye-spot (stigma) for detecting light.
  • They possess chlorophyll and carry out photosynthesis in the presence of sunlight (autotrophic, like plants).
  • In the absence of sunlight they behave as heterotrophs, feeding on smaller organisms (like animals). Hence they are mixotrophic and show a plant-animal intermediate nature. …
