A protein's primary structure is the amino-acid sequence, its secondary structure is local coiling/folding (helix or pleated sheet), and its tertiary structure is the overall 3-D folded shape.

Schematic representation (using protein as the example polymer):

  1. Primary structure (linear sequence of monomers):

    NH2 - aa1 - aa2 - aa3 - aa4 - aa5 - ... - COOH

(amino acids joined one after another by peptide bonds in a definite sequence)

  2. Secondary structure (regular local folding of the chain):

    • alpha-helix: the chain coils like a spring (coil ~ coil ~ coil ~ coil), stabilised by hydrogen bonds; OR
    • beta-pleated sheet: the chain folds back and forth in a zig-zag =====> <===== =====> (adjacent strands held by hydrogen bonds)
  3. Tertiary structure (overall 3-D shape): …
