DNA is synthesised (replicated) during the S (Synthesis) phase of interphase.

The cell cycle is divided into interphase (G₁, S, G₂) and the M phase (mitosis/division). Interphase is the preparatory phase during which the cell grows and copies its contents.

  • G₁ phase — cell grows, synthesises proteins and RNA; DNA is not yet copied.
  • S phase (Synthesis) — DNA replication takes place here, so the amount of DNA per cell doubles (from 2C to 4C). Histone proteins are also synthesised.
