Meiosis = two divisions after one DNA replication, halving chromosome number, with pairing and crossing over of homologues, producing four genetically variable haploid cells.

Key features of meiosis:

  1. Two sequential divisions: Meiosis consists of Meiosis I (reductional) and Meiosis II (equational), but DNA replication occurs only once (before meiosis I).
  2. Reduction of chromosome number: The chromosome number is halved - a diploid (2n) cell gives rise to haploid (n) cells. This restores the original number after fertilisation, keeping the species' chromosome number constant.
  3. Pairing (synapsis) of homologous chromosomes: During prophase I (zygotene) homologous chromosomes pair to form bivalents/tetrads.
  4. Crossing over (recombination): In pachytene, non-sister chromatids of homologous chromosomes exchange segments at chiasmata, producing new gene combinations - a major source of variation.
  5. Four daughter cells: At the end, four haploid cells are formed from one parent cell. …
