The cell was discovered by Robert Hooke in 1665; he described it in his book Micrographia.

In 1665, Robert Hooke, an English scientist, examined a thin slice of cork (dead bark tissue) under a compound microscope he had built. He observed that the cork was made up of small, box-like compartments, which he named 'cells' (from the Latin cellula, meaning 'small room'), because they reminded him of the small rooms monks lived in.

What Hooke actually saw were the empty cell walls of dead cork cells, since cork tissue consists of non-living cells at maturity — he did not observe a living cell with its contents.
