Placentation = the arrangement of ovules on the placenta within the ovary. Dianthus shows free central placentation.

Inside the ovary, ovules are attached to a cushion-like tissue called the placenta. The particular way in which the placenta and ovules are arranged within the ovary is called placentation.

There are several types — marginal, axile, parietal, free central, and basal.

In Dianthus the ovary is unilocular (single chamber), the septa are absent, and the ovules are borne on a central column that arises from the base but is not connected to the ovary wall by septa. This arrangement is called free central placentation.
