Parts of a Flower – From Intuition to Precision
Think of a flower not as a decoration, but as a reproductive machine. Its entire purpose is to make seeds, which will grow into the next generation of plants. Every part you see is arranged to achieve that single goal: pollination, fertilisation, and seed formation.
If you look at a typical flower like a hibiscus or a rose, you'll notice layers of parts arranged in rings. These rings are called whorls, and they sit on a swollen base called the thalamus (or receptacle). The thalamus is like the stage; everything else is an actor on it.
The Four Whorls (from outside to inside)
A complete flower has four whorls. We'll go from the outermost (protective) to the innermost (reproductive).
1. Calyx – The Sepals (Protective Cover)
The outermost whorl is the calyx, made of individual units called sepals. These are usually green and leaf-like. Their job is simple: protect the flower bud before it opens. Think of them as the flower's security guard, wrapping tightly around the developing petals and reproductive parts.
In some flowers, sepals are brightly coloured and look like petals (e.g., in Clematis). These are called petaloid sepals.
2. Corolla – The Petals (Attraction)
Inside the calyx lies the corolla, made of petals. Petals are often brightly coloured and scented. Their job is to attract pollinators — bees, butterflies, birds, or even wind. The colour and fragrance are advertisements: "Come here, there's nectar!"
The calyx and corolla together are called the perianth (especially when they look similar, as in lilies).
3. Androecium – The Stamens (Male Part)
Moving inward, we reach the male reproductive whorl: the androecium. It is made of stamens. Each stamen has two parts:
- Filament – a thin stalk.
- Anther – a knob-like structure at the top that produces pollen grains (the male gametes).
Pollen is the flower's sperm. It must reach the female part to fertilise the egg.
Count the stamens — their number is often a key clue for identifying a flower's family (e.g., 5 stamens in Solanaceae, many in Malvaceae).
4. Gynoecium – The Carpels (Female Part)
The innermost whorl is the gynoecium, made of carpels. Each carpel has three regions:
- Ovary – the swollen base containing ovules (each ovule holds an egg cell).
- Style – a slender tube rising from the ovary.
- Stigma – a sticky or feathery tip at the top of the style, designed to catch pollen.
The gynoecium is the flower's womb. After pollination, pollen lands on the stigma, grows a tube down the style, and fertilises the ovule. The ovule becomes a seed; the ovary becomes a fruit.
A carpel is the basic unit of the gynoecium. If the gynoecium has multiple fused carpels, it's called syncarpous; if they are separate, it's apocarpous (e.g., in a strawberry flower).
Arrangement on the Thalamus
All four whorls are attached to the thalamus in a specific order. The thalamus is the thickened part of the flower stalk (pedicel). The arrangement can vary:
