Binomial nomenclature (Linnaeus) gives every organism a two-part Latin name: genus + species, written in a standardised way.

Binomial nomenclature is the internationally accepted method of naming living organisms, proposed by Carolus Linnaeus.

Each scientific name consists of two words (a binomial):

  1. The first word is the genus (generic name) and always begins with a capital letter.
  2. The second word is the species (specific epithet) and begins with a small letter. Rules (as per ICBN): • The name is written in Latin (or Latinised) and is usually italicised in print, or underlined separately when handwritten. • The name of the author who first described the species may be written in abbreviated form after the specific epithet (e.g. Mangifera indica Linn.). …
