A hydrogen bond forms when hydrogen, covalently bonded to a small, highly electronegative atom, is attracted to a lone pair on another electronegative atom; it can occur between molecules or within a single molecule.

Definition: A hydrogen bond is a weak electrostatic force of attraction that exists between a hydrogen atom (covalently bonded to a small, highly electronegative atom like F, O, or N) and a lone pair of electrons on another highly electronegative atom (F, O, or N), which may be in the same molecule or a different one. Because the electronegative atom pulls the bonding electron pair strongly towards itself, the H atom acquires a partial positive charge (δ+\delta^+), which is then attracted to the lone pair of a nearby electronegative atom.

Types of hydrogen bonds:

  1. Intermolecular hydrogen bond: formed between two (or more) different molecules of the same or different compounds.

Example: In liquid water, one water molecule's H (bonded to O) is attracted to the lone pair on the O of a neighbouring water molecule: H-O-H⋯O(H)-H\text{H-O-H}\cdots\text{O(H)-H}. Also seen in HF (H-F⋯H-F\text{H-F}\cdots\text{H-F}) and in alcohols.

  2. Intramolecular hydrogen bond: formed within a single molecule, when a hydrogen and an electronegative atom in the same molecule are close enough geometrically to interact, forming a stable ring (usually 5- or 6-membered). …
