PAN (peroxyacetyl nitrate) is a secondary pollutant of photochemical smog; it irritates the eyes and respiratory tract and harms vegetation.

PAN stands for Peroxyacetyl Nitrate, with the formula CH3COOONO2 (an acyl peroxy nitrate).

Formation: It is a secondary pollutant produced in photochemical smog. In the presence of sunlight, unburnt hydrocarbons and oxides of nitrogen (from vehicle exhaust) undergo a series of photochemical reactions to form oxidants such as ozone, PAN and aldehydes.
