The conjugate acid of a species is formed by adding one H+H^+ to it; the conjugate base is formed by removing one H+H^+ from it (Brønsted–Lowry theory).

By the Brønsted–Lowry definition, an acid is a proton (H+H^+) donor and a base is a proton acceptor. For any species XX: its conjugate acid is X+H+X + H^+, and its conjugate base is X−H+X - H^+.

(a) OH−OH^-:

  • Conjugate acid (add H+H^+): OH−+H+→H2OOH^- + H^+ \rightarrow H_2O
  • Conjugate base (remove H+H^+): OH−→O2−+H+OH^- \rightarrow O^{2-} + H^+

(b) H2OH_2O:

  • Conjugate acid: H2O+H+→H3O+H_2O + H^+ \rightarrow H_3O^+
  • Conjugate base: H2O→OH−+H+H_2O \rightarrow OH^- + H^+

(c) HCO3−HCO_3^- (bicarbonate):

  • Conjugate acid: HCO3−+H+→H2CO3HCO_3^- + H^+ \rightarrow H_2CO_3
  • Conjugate base: HCO3−→CO32−+H+HCO_3^- \rightarrow CO_3^{2-} + H^+ …
