Each structure is built by first fixing the principal functional group/parent chain named by the IUPAC name, then attaching the remaining substituents at the positions the name specifies.

1. Trichloroethanoic acid (trichloroacetic acid):

The parent chain is ethanoic acid, CH₃–COOH (2 carbons, carboxylic acid). "Tri-chloro" means all three hydrogens on the carbon next to –COOH (the alpha carbon, C2 in "ethanoic") are replaced by chlorine atoms.

Structure: CCl₃–COOH

(Carbon 1 = –COOH; Carbon 2 = CCl₃, bearing all 3 Cl atoms.)

2. Neopentane (IUPAC name: 2,2-dimethylpropane):

The parent chain is propane (3 carbons: C1–C2–C3), with two methyl (–CH₃) substituents both on C2 ("2,2-dimethyl"). This means the central carbon (C2) is bonded to 4 carbon groups in total: the original C1 (CH₃) and C3 (CH₃) of propane, plus the two extra methyl substituents — giving a central carbon bonded to four –CH₃ groups.

Structure: C(CH₃)₄, i.e. a central quaternary carbon bonded to 4 methyl groups (also written as (CH₃)₄C).

3. p-Nitrobenzaldehyde: …
