Position isomerism keeps the same functional group but places it (or a substituent) at a different carbon; functional isomerism gives compounds with the same molecular formula but entirely different functional groups.

Position isomerism

Compounds with the same molecular formula and the same functional group, but differing in the position of that functional group (or a substituent) along the carbon chain.

  1. 1-Propanol and 2-Propanol (molecular formula C3H8O):
    • 1-Propanol: CH3–CH2–CH2–OH (–OH on the terminal carbon, C1)
    • 2-Propanol: CH3–CH(OH)–CH3 (–OH on the middle carbon, C2)
  2. 1-Butene and 2-Butene (molecular formula C4H8):
    • 1-Butene: CH2=CH–CH2–CH3 (double bond between C1–C2)
    • 2-Butene: CH3–CH=CH–CH3 (double bond between C2–C3)

In both pairs, the functional group (–OH, or C=C) is identical, only its position on the chain differs.

Functional isomerism

Compounds with the same molecular formula but different functional groups altogether, giving them very different chemical properties.

  1. Ethanol and Dimethyl ether (molecular formula C2H6O):
    • Ethanol: CH3–CH2–OH (contains an –OH, alcohol functional group)
    • Dimethyl ether: CH3–O–CH3 (contains a C–O–C ether linkage)
  2. Propanal and Propanone (Acetone) (molecular formula C3H6O): …
