A redox reaction is one where oxidation (loss of electrons) and reduction (gain of electrons) happen together; e.g. Zn + Cu2+ -> Zn2+ + Cu.

The redox concept (electronic concept of oxidation and reduction):

A redox (reduction-oxidation) reaction is a reaction in which oxidation and reduction take place at the same time. In terms of electrons:

  • Oxidation is the loss of electrons (or increase in oxidation number).
  • Reduction is the gain of electrons (or decrease in oxidation number).

Because electrons released by one species must be taken up by another, oxidation and reduction always occur together; hence the name redox.

Example:

Zn(s) + Cu^2+(aq) -> Zn^2+(aq) + Cu(s)

Here:

  • Zn -> Zn^2+ + 2e- (Zn loses electrons, so it is oxidised; it is the reducing agent). …
