The first law of thermodynamics is the law of conservation of energy applied to thermodynamic systems: the total energy of an isolated system remains constant, and any change in a system's internal energy equals the heat added to it plus the work done on it.

Statement: Energy can neither be created nor destroyed; it can only be transformed from one form to another. Equivalently, the total energy of an isolated system is constant.

Mathematical form: For a closed system undergoing a change of state, if q is the heat absorbed by the system and w is the work done on the system, the change in internal energy ΔU is given by:

ΔU = q + w

(Some conventions write ΔU = q − w when w is defined as work done BY the system; the TS/NCERT convention used here takes w as work done ON the system.)

  • If heat is absorbed by the system, q is positive; if heat is released, q is negative.
  • If work is done on the system (e.g. compression), w is positive; if the system does work on the surroundings (e.g. expansion), w is negative. …
