Fundamental units are the units of the basic, independent quantities (metre, kilogram, second, etc.); derived units are combinations of these (m/s, newton, joule, etc.).

Fundamental (base) units:

  • These are the units of the fundamental (base) physical quantities, which are chosen to be independent of one another and cannot be expressed in terms of other quantities.
  • In the SI system there are seven such base quantities and units: length (metre, m), mass (kilogram, kg), time (second, s), electric current (ampere, A), temperature (kelvin, K), amount of substance (mole, mol) and luminous intensity (candela, cd).

Derived units:

  • These are the units of derived physical quantities, which are obtained by combining the fundamental quantities using multiplication and division.
  • They are expressed in terms of the fundamental units. Examples:
    • Speed/velocity: metre per second (m/s), from length/time.
    • Force: newton (N) = kg m/s^2, from mass x acceleration. …
