Hypertrophy is growth in cell size; hyperplasia is growth in cell number — both increase an organ's overall size but by different cellular mechanisms.

Both hypertrophy and hyperplasia describe how a tissue or organ increases in size, but they differ in the underlying cellular change:

Hypertrophy:

  • Definition: an increase in the size of individual cells, without an increase in the total number of cells, causing the tissue/organ as a whole to enlarge.
  • The existing cells synthesize more proteins/organelles and grow larger, rather than dividing.
  • Example: Skeletal muscle fibres and cardiac muscle cells enlarge (hypertrophy) in response to regular weight training or increased workload — e.g., the biceps of a bodybuilder, or an athlete's enlarged heart — the muscle has bigger fibres, not more of them (since mature muscle cells largely do not divide).

Hyperplasia:

  • Definition: an increase in the number of cells in a tissue or organ, resulting from increased mitotic cell division, which enlarges the organ.
  • The individual cells remain roughly normal in size; it is their multiplying number that increases organ size. …
