Straight-line depreciation = 10% of Rs. 40,000 = Rs. 4,000 every year. Over four years (2016-17 to 2019-20) the book value falls from Rs. 40,000 to Rs. 24,000; the scrap sells for Rs. 18,000, giving a loss on sale of Rs. 6,000.

Working note: Cost Rs. 40,000; depreciation Rs. 4,000 p.a. for 4 years = Rs. 16,000; book value before sale = Rs. 24,000; sale value Rs. 18,000; loss = Rs. 24,000 - Rs. 18,000 = Rs. 6,000.
