Depreciation is the gradual, permanent fall in the value of a fixed asset. Its causes include constant use (wear and tear), the mere passage of time, obsolescence due to new technology, depletion of natural resources, accidents, and the expiry of legal rights.

The principal causes of depreciation studied in TS Intermediate 2nd-year Accountancy are:

  1. Wear and tear: Continuous use of plant, machinery, furniture and vehicles physically wears them out and reduces their value.
  2. Efflux of time: Some assets lose value simply with the passage of time, whether used or not (for example, leasehold property and patents with a fixed life).
  3. Obsolescence: New inventions, improved technology or changes in demand make an existing asset out of date even when it is still usable.
