The Gaining Ratio is the ratio in which the remaining partners gain (acquire) the share of the retiring or deceased partner. Gaining Ratio = New Ratio − Old Ratio for each continuing partner. It is used mainly to adjust the outgoing partner's goodwill, which the gaining partners bear in this ratio.

When a partner leaves the firm, his share of profit is taken over by the continuing partners, whose profit shares therefore go up. The Gaining Ratio measures how much each continuing partner gains. It is calculated as:
