The multiple-shop or chain-store system is a form of large-scale retailing. Under it, a single manufacturer or trading organisation opens a large number of branch shops in different localities, towns and cities. All the shops look alike, carry the same name and sign-board, and sell the same range of standardised goods at the same fixed prices. The important features are: (1) all branches are owned and controlled by the same head office; (2) buying is centralised, so goods are purchased in bulk and distributed to the branches; (3) prices are fixed and uniform, and sales are generally for cash; and (4) each branch keeps accounts that are sent to the head office for central control.
