Bt cotton is a transgenic cotton crop engineered with a bacterial (Bacillus thuringiensis) toxin gene that confers resistance to bollworm and other lepidopteran insect pests.

Background:

Bacillus thuringiensis (Bt) is a soil bacterium that produces crystal (Cry) proteins toxic to specific insects during a particular stage of its life cycle. Different strains of Bt produce different Cry proteins that are toxic to specific groups of insects, e.g., cryIAc and cryIIAb control the cotton bollworm.

How Bt cotton works:

  1. The bacterial cry gene (e.g., cryIAc) is isolated and, using recombinant DNA technology, is introduced into the cotton plant genome, so the plant itself synthesises the Bt toxin protein.
  2. The Bt toxin is produced by the bacterium (and by the transgenic plant) as an inactive protoxin, which becomes active only after being ingested by the insect.
  3. In the insect's gut, the alkaline pH solubilises/activates the protoxin into its active toxic form.
  4. The activated toxin binds to specific receptors on the surface of the midgut epithelial cells, creating pores. This causes the cells to swell and lyse, ultimately leading to the death of the insect larva (e.g., bollworm). …
