In a eukaryotic (split) gene, exons are the parts of the transcript that are retained/expressed, while introns are the intervening, non-coding parts that get removed by splicing.

Eukaryotic genes are usually 'split genes' — they contain the coding sequence interrupted by non-coding sequences.

Exons: These are the expressed sequences — segments of DNA (and correspondingly of the primary transcript, hnRNA) that appear/are retained in the mature, processed mRNA. They contain the actual coding information that gets translated into protein.
