AUG is the universal start codon of the genetic code — it both initiates translation and specifies methionine.

The genetic code is read from mRNA in triplets called codons, each specifying a particular amino acid (or a stop signal) during protein synthesis (translation).

Function of AUG:

  1. Initiation signal: AUG is the codon that marks the START of translation. The small ribosomal subunit, along with initiator tRNA, scans the mRNA and recognizes the AUG codon (often within a Kozak-like context in eukaryotes, or preceded by a Shine-Dalgarno sequence in prokaryotes) as the site to begin protein synthesis.
  2. Coding for methionine: AUG simultaneously codes for the amino acid methionine. In prokaryotes, the initiator tRNA carries a modified form, N-formylmethionine (fMet), so the very first amino acid of a newly synthesized prokaryotic polypeptide is fMet; in eukaryotes it is unmodified methionine. …
