Capping = adding methyl guanosine triphosphate to the 5' end; tailing = adding a poly-A tail (adenylate residues) to the 3' end of hnRNA during mRNA processing.

In eukaryotes, the gene that is transcribed produces a primary transcript called heterogeneous nuclear RNA (hnRNA), which contains both exons and introns. Before it can act as functional mRNA it undergoes processing, which includes capping, tailing and splicing.
