Auxins are used to promote rooting of cuttings, prevent fruit/leaf drop, induce parthenocarpy and flowering, control apical dominance, and act as weedicides (2,4-D).

Auxins (e.g. natural IAA, and synthetic auxins like NAA, IBA and 2,4-D) are plant growth regulators with several important applications in agriculture and horticulture:

  1. Rooting of cuttings: Auxins such as IBA and NAA are applied to the base of stem cuttings to promote the formation of new roots, which is widely used in the vegetative propagation of plants.

  2. Prevention of fruit and leaf drop: Auxins prevent the premature fall (abscission) of fruits and leaves by spraying, at the same time they promote the abscission of older, mature leaves and fruits when needed.

  3. Parthenocarpy: Auxins can induce the formation of seedless (parthenocarpic) fruits, for example in tomato.

  4. Promotion of flowering: Auxins promote flowering, for example in pineapple.
