Water has to travel from the roots to the top of even the tallest trees through the dead, tubular xylem elements. This is possible because of certain physical properties of water:
-
Cohesion: Water molecules are held together by hydrogen bonds, giving strong mutual attraction. This allows water to remain as a continuous column without breaking.
-
Adhesion: Water molecules are attracted to the hydrophilic (polar) surfaces of the xylem walls. This helps water cling to the vessel walls and resist gravity.
-
Surface tension: Because attraction between water molecules in the liquid is greater than at the water-air interface, water shows high surface tension, which helps maintain the column.
