Stomatal movement is governed by turgor changes in guard cells, driven mainly by reversible potassium ion (K+) influx/efflux — turgid guard cells open the pore, flaccid guard cells close it.

Guard cells are specialised kidney-shaped (or dumbbell-shaped in grasses) epidermal cells that flank the stomatal pore. Their walls are unevenly thickened — the wall bordering the pore (inner wall) is thicker and less elastic than the outer wall away from the pore. This structural asymmetry is central to the opening mechanism.

Opening of stomata (K+ ion mechanism):

  1. In light, guard cell chloroplasts and the plasma membrane H⁺-ATPase actively pump H⁺ ions out of the guard cells, creating an electrochemical gradient.
  2. This drives an influx of K⁺ ions (and accompanying Cl⁻ or malate²⁻ ions for charge balance) into the guard cells through ion channels.
  3. The accumulation of solutes lowers the guard cells' water potential, so water enters the guard cells by osmosis.
  4. As guard cells become turgid, the thin, elastic outer wall stretches more than the thick, rigid inner wall; because the two guard cells are joined at their tips, this differential stretching bows the guard cells outward/apart.
  5. This bowing pulls the inner walls away from each other, opening the stomatal pore.

Closing of stomata:

  1. In darkness, or under water stress (mediated by the hormone abscisic acid, ABA), K⁺ and accompanying ions move OUT of the guard cells. …
