Gangue (or matrix): The ore of a metal is usually mixed with unwanted rocky and earthy impurities such as sand (SiO2), clay, limestone, etc. These impurities associated with the ore are collectively called the gangue.
Slag: To remove the gangue during smelting, a substance called a flux is added. The flux combines chemically with the gangue to form a low-melting, fusible mass called slag. Being lighter, the slag floats on the molten metal and can be skimmed off easily.
