Roasting is heating a sulfide ore in excess air to convert it to an oxide (releasing SO2); calcination is heating a carbonate/hydrated ore in limited air to drive off volatile matter such as CO2 or water.

Both roasting and calcination are pyrometallurgical steps used to convert a concentrated ore into its oxide before reduction, but they differ in the type of ore treated and the conditions used.

Roasting:

  • Used for sulfide ores.
  • The ore is heated strongly in the presence of excess air/oxygen, below its melting point.
  • Sulfide is oxidised to oxide, and SO2 gas is released. Example: Zinc blende (ZnS) is roasted: 2ZnS + 3O2 --heat--> 2ZnO + 2SO2 Another example: 2Cu2S + 3O2 -> 2Cu2O + 2SO2 (roasting of copper pyrites/matte).

Calcination:

  • Used for carbonate or hydroxide ores.
  • The ore is heated strongly in a limited supply of air (or absence of air), typically below its melting point. …
