A Grignard reagent RMgX is made by reacting an alkyl/aryl halide with magnesium in dry ether.

Grignard reagents are alkyl (or aryl) magnesium halides, R-Mg-X, and are very useful in organic synthesis.

Preparation:

  • A haloalkane (R-X) is treated with magnesium turnings in the presence of dry (anhydrous) ether.
  • General reaction: R-X + Mg --(dry ether)--> R-Mg-X
  • Example: CH3Br + Mg --(dry ether)--> CH3MgBr (methylmagnesium bromide) …
