Enantiomers are mirror-image stereoisomers of a chiral molecule that cannot be superimposed on one another.

Enantiomers are a pair of stereoisomers of a compound that are related to each other as non-superimposable mirror images.

This arises when a molecule contains a chiral centre — typically a carbon atom bonded to four different groups/atoms (an asymmetric carbon, marked C*). Such a molecule has no plane of symmetry, and its mirror image cannot be superimposed on the original — the two mirror-image forms are enantiomers of each other.

Example: 2-chlorobutane (CH3−CH2−C∗HCl−CH3CH_3-CH_2-\overset{*}{C}HCl-CH_3) has one chiral carbon and exists as a pair of enantiomers.

Key properties of enantiomers:

  1. They have identical physical properties (melting point, boiling point, density, solubility, etc.) in an achiral (non-chiral) environment. …
