Polymers are macromolecules made of a large number of repeating structural units (monomers) covalently bonded together.

Polymers are large, high molecular mass substances formed by the joining together of a large number of small, simple repeating structural units called monomers, through covalent bonds. The process by which monomers combine to form a polymer is called polymerisation.

The word 'polymer' is derived from Greek: 'poly' (many) + 'mer' (part/unit).

Polymers may be natural (e.g., proteins, cellulose, natural rubber) or synthetic (e.g., polythene, nylon, PVC, Bakelite).

Example: Polythene (polyethylene) is formed by the addition polymerisation of thousands of ethene (ethylene) monomer units:

n(CH2=CH2)→catalyst, heat, pressure−(CH2−CH2)n−n(CH_2=CH_2) \xrightarrow{\text{catalyst, heat, pressure}} -(CH_2-CH_2)_n-
