Molarity (M) is the number of moles of solute dissolved per litre of solution. For 5 g NaOH in 450 mL solution, molarity works out to about 0.278 mol/L.

Definition: Molarity (M) of a solution is defined as the number of moles of solute dissolved in one litre (1 dm³) of the solution.

M=Number of moles of soluteVolume of solution in litres=nsoluteV(L)M = \dfrac{\text{Number of moles of solute}}{\text{Volume of solution in litres}} = \dfrac{n_{solute}}{V(\text{L})}

Its unit is mol L⁻¹ (also written as mol/dm³ or simply M). Molarity depends on temperature since volume changes slightly with temperature.

Calculation:

Given: mass of NaOH = 5 g; volume of solution = 450 mL = 0.450 L.

Molar mass of NaOH = 23 (Na) + 16 (O) + 1 (H) = 40 g mol⁻¹

Step 1 — moles of NaOH:

n=given massmolar mass=5 g40 g mol−1=0.125 moln = \dfrac{\text{given mass}}{\text{molar mass}} = \dfrac{5\ g}{40\ g\,mol^{-1}} = 0.125\ mol
