The spin-only formula estimates the magnetic moment of a transition-metal ion purely from its number of unpaired electrons.

Transition metal ions are paramagnetic when they contain unpaired d-electrons. The magnetic moment arising mainly from electron spin (orbital contribution being largely quenched in the first transition series) is given by the spin-only formula:

μs=n(n+2)  BM (Bohr Magnetons)\mu_s = \sqrt{n(n+2)} \; \text{BM (Bohr Magnetons)}

where nn = number of unpaired electrons in the ion.
