Bragg's equation nλ = 2d sinθ follows from the path difference between X-rays reflected off two parallel atomic planes.

Derivation:

Consider a crystal made of parallel planes of atoms separated by a distance d. A beam of monochromatic X-rays of wavelength λ strikes these planes at a glancing angle θ.

  • Two parallel rays fall on two successive planes. The first ray reflects from the upper plane; the second ray penetrates and reflects from the next lower plane.
  • The ray reflected from the lower plane travels an extra distance compared with the ray reflected from the upper plane.

Calculating the path difference:

  • Drop perpendiculars from the point of reflection on the upper plane to the incident and reflected rays of the lower plane. The extra path travelled = (segment in) + (segment out) = d sinθ + d sinθ = 2d sinθ.

Condition for constructive interference (a bright reflection):

  • The two reflected rays reinforce each other only when the extra path difference equals a whole number (n) of wavelengths.
  • Path difference = nλ
