By symmetry, each of the 5 digits appears equally often in each of the 4 place-value positions; use this to find the total contribution of each position.

Digits available: 1,3,5,7,91,3,5,7,9 (sum =25=25). We form 4-digit numbers using 4 of these 5 digits, without repetition.

Total such numbers =5P4=5×4×3×2=120= {}^5P_4 = 5\times4\times3\times2 = 120

For any fixed position (say units), fix one digit there; the remaining 3 positions are filled by arranging the other 4 digits taken 3 at a time: 4P3=24^4P_3=24 ways. So each digit appears in each position exactly 24 times.
